The real story of Zionism
Being brave means daring to do the right thing. The Middle
East, where we live, is a tough neighborhood. We have to be physically brave, but we must also be morally brave to
survive. Zionism can do well by doing good.
Doing justice to all our citizens requires bravery. In slightly over a century, Zionism - the Jewish national liberation movement
- has fulfilled an age-old dream
once thought to be impossible. From the shared dream of a few idealists, the Jewish state has become a reality. "The
restoration of the Jews," once viewed as the quixotic project of eccentrics, has become a fact. Overcoming enormous
obstacles including the skepticism of many Jews, Zionism, the Jewish national liberation movement, created the state of
Israel and revived a
people. Zionism has come a long way from the days of the pioneer Halutzim, and the Jewish people have come a long way from
the ghettos of Europe and the apartheid of Islamic society. Jewish mechanics and and Jewish farmers and Jewish
truck drivers and Jewish soldiers are not longer the stuff of jokes here. Hebrew is a spoken language. Jew is still a
curse word in Arabic, but it is not an object of contempt. All these are
accomplishments of Zionism.
It wasn't only about real
estate. Through Zionism, the Jewish people transformed themselves. It happened because people of
extraordinary vision were brave enough to do the right thing.
If you believe in the "right of self-determination" of the Palestinian Arab people, you cannot deny the
same right to the Jewish people. "Justice" requires two states for two peoples.
Zionism, the Jewish national liberation movement is no different from the liberation movements of other peoples,
and is inherently progressive, not racist.
Zionism succeeded in part because it has been continually able to reinvent itself. Being brave requires discarding outmoded ideas and having the courage to look to the future, rather
than the past. Our country and the Jewish community living here and abroad are not the same as they were a hundred years ago and neither
is the world. A new reality requires new solutions and new means to reach the same goal: a free people, at peace in our
own land. This requires a new vision and new courage.
